When Eating Disorders and Neurodiversity Intersect: What Caregivers Need to Know

We're partnering with Dr. Anita Federici, Clinical Psychologist for a third education session: When Eating Disorders and Neurodiversity Intersect: What Caregivers Need to Know. It will be offered twice so that participants can find a time that best suits their needs. Caregivers often sense that “something more is going on” when eating disorder treatment does not seem to fit, progress feels uneven, or standard recommendations create more distress than relief. This session explores how neurodiversity, including autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental differences, can shape the experience of eating disorders across the lifespan. Using a neuroaffirming and anti-oppressive lens, the workshop examines how sensory sensitivities, differences in communication, rigidity or need for predictability, and emotion regulation challenges may influence eating behaviours, treatment engagement, and recovery. Caregivers will be supported to move toward a deeper understanding of their loved one’s nervous system, needs, and strengths, reducing frustration, stigma, and isolation for everyone involved.

About Us

NIED exists to give hope and support to individuals with an eating disorder and their caregivers. We do this by developing and sharing educational resources and information, conducting, or participating in research, and taking action to address the needs of Canadians impacted by eating disorders.
